How the tender readiness checker works
- 1. Answer five questions
Sector, contract type, buyer, contract value and workforce. Turnover and tender text are optional.
- 2. See your policy list
Must-have and recommended policies for your bid, each with the reason and the official source.
- 3. Close the gaps
Tick the ones you already have. Get the rest as branded PDF and Word policies, or download a report for your team.
What the checker looks at
UK public-sector buyers use written policies as evidence in the selection stage of a tender: in exclusion questions, pass/fail conditions of participation and scored quality questions. Which ones they ask for depends on a handful of facts about you and the contract:
- Your sector
- Adds the documents your type of work brings, such as RAMS, COSHH and working at height for construction, or safeguarding and DBS checks for care and education.
- The buyer
- Central government, NHS, councils, housing associations and education buyers ask for different things, for example Cyber Essentials and Carbon Reduction Plans for some central government contracts.
- Contract value
- Major contracts trigger extra requirements, such as a PPN 006 Carbon Reduction Plan above £5m a year and higher social value weighting.
- Your workforce and turnover
- A written health and safety policy is a legal duty at five or more employees, and a modern slavery statement at £36m turnover.
- The tender's own words
- Paste the policy requirements from the tender or questionnaire and the checker matches them against all 39 policies in your browser.
Free checker or Tender Readiness Report?
The checker and its on-screen results are free. If you want something to share with colleagues or keep with the bid file, the optional Tender Readiness Report (£9.99) is a branded PDF with your required policies, reasons and sources, your gaps in priority order and a deadline checklist. You don't need it to use the checker.
Tender checker FAQs
Is the tender policy checker really free?
Yes. The checker and its results are free and you don't need to give your email address. An optional branded Tender Readiness Report (PDF) is available if you want a copy for your team.
What policies do I need for a tender?
It depends on your sector, the buyer and the contract value, but most UK public-sector tenders ask for health and safety, equality, data protection, modern slavery, environmental, anti-bribery and quality policies. The checker adds sector-specific documents (for example RAMS and COSHH for construction, or safeguarding for care and education) and flags extra requirements such as a PPN 006 Carbon Reduction Plan for central government contracts above £5m a year.
Is my tender text stored?
No. Anything you paste is checked in your browser against our 39 policies and isn't sent to us. Only if you go on to order the Tender Readiness Report are your answers (and any pasted text) saved, so the report can be produced.
How accurate are the results?
The rules are based on the legal duties and government guidance behind each request (for example the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, the Modern Slavery Act 2015, PPN 006 and PPN 002), and each result shows its reason and source. Every buyer sets its own requirements, so always check the procurement documents. It is guidance, not legal advice.
Does it work for PSQ, PQQ and SQ questionnaires?
Yes. The policies buyers request are much the same whether they use the Procurement Specific Questionnaire under the Procurement Act 2023, the older Standard Selection Questionnaire or their own PQQ. Paste the policy requirements from the questionnaire for the closest match.
Can I use it for CHAS, Constructionline or SafeContractor?
The checker focuses on public-sector tenders, but the health and safety, environmental, quality and equality policies it lists are the same core documents those schemes ask for. See our guide to CHAS, Constructionline and SafeContractor documents.
