Who needs a whistleblowing policy?

Every UK employer is covered by whistleblowing law: workers who make a protected disclosure must not be treated badly because of it, and dismissing an employee for doing so is automatically unfair. Most employers aren't legally required to have a written policy, but the government recommends one, and public-sector buyers commonly ask for it in governance and ethics questions. A clear policy also helps you hear about problems early and shows you took reasonable steps to protect staff who speak up.

Free whistleblowing policy FAQs

Is this whistleblowing policy template really free?

Yes. There's no card and no catch: answer the questions, and the tailored policy is yours to keep and use, as PDF and Word. We also send a time-limited discount code in case you want other policies, but you don't have to buy anything.

Is a whistleblowing policy a legal requirement in the UK?

For most employers, no, but whistleblowing protection applies to every employer and government guidance recommends a policy. Some organisations, such as certain FCA and PRA-regulated firms and NHS bodies, are expected to have specific arrangements. Read more in our guide to whistleblowing policy requirements.

How is this different from a generic template?

A generic template leaves you to fill in names, routes and regulators. This one is written around your answers: your sector, size, nation, reporting routes, timescales and the prescribed persons relevant to your work.

Can I use it in a tender?

Yes. It's written to answer the governance and ethics questions public-sector buyers ask. Review it, make sure it matches how you work, then approve and date it. To see which other policies your tender needs, use the free tender policy checker.

Does it cover Scotland and Northern Ireland?

Yes. The policy reflects the nation you choose, including the right prescribed persons. Northern Ireland has its own whistleblowing legislation, which the policy notes.

Can I get it with my logo, alongside my other policies?

Yes. The branded Whistleblowing policy is £19.99, or included in all 39 policies for £199.

The policy reflects your answers and current UK law and guidance as at October 2026. Review it to make sure it matches how your organisation works before you approve it. Templates, not legal advice. Published by the companypolicies.ai team, Spire Trade Advisors Ltd.
